In the years before World War II, Chiyo is torn from her family and sent to work in a geisha house, where a poor child is remade by strict training, hierarchy, and the demands of a tightly controlled world. Ziyi Zhang carries the story into adulthood as Chiyo takes on the name Sayuri, with Michelle Yeoh as an established geisha whose guidance shapes her future. As war and social change press in on Japan, Sayuri’s life is also marked by a long, private attachment to a man played by Ken Watanabe.
