Before the U.S. entered World War I, a group of young Americans volunteer for the French military and join the Lafayette Escadrille, where rough training flights soon turn into aerial combat over France. James Franco is among the new pilots, with Martin Henderson beside him in a squadron learning how to fight in the air before America has even entered the war. The story follows their enlistment, barracks life, and dangerous missions in open-cockpit biplanes, while a romance on the ground runs alongside the air war in 1916 France.
