Pawn Sacrifice
DramaThriller115 min
At the height of the Cold War, Brooklyn chess prodigy Bobby Fischer is pushed from local fame into an international standoff when he challenges the Soviet chess establishment. Tobey Maguire is Fischer, a young genius whose mounting paranoia turns every match into something larger than sport. Across the board stands Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber), the reigning Soviet champion, while Peter Sarsgaard's Father Bill Lombardy becomes Fischer's closest adviser as the pressure builds toward the 1972 world championship in Reykjavík. The film frames the contest as both a personal unraveling and a political spectacle, with governments, media, and rival camps circling every move.
