The Color Purple

DramaMusical145 min

In early-20th-century Georgia, Celie faces years of hardship before slowly claiming a life of her own through the women who stand beside her. Fantasia Barrino is Celie in adulthood, with Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as her younger self, as the story moves across decades of change. Taraji P. Henson’s Shug Avery enters as a glamorous singer whose presence shifts Celie’s world, and Danielle Brooks brings force to Sofia, another woman who refuses to be diminished. Framed as a musical period drama, the film follows Celie through racism, family struggle, and the sustaining bond of sisterhood.
