The African Queen
ActionAdventureDramaRomanceWar105 min
At the outbreak of World War I in East Africa, Humphrey Bogart is Charlie Allnut, a gin-soaked riverboat captain whose aging steamer becomes the only way out after German forces descend on a remote mission. Katharine Hepburn’s Rose Sayer is proper, stubborn, and newly unmoored, and she pushes Charlie to take the African Queen downriver toward a confrontation with a German warship. Directed by John Huston, the film keeps its two opposites in close quarters through rapids, breakdowns, wildlife, and the clash between Charlie’s rough habits and Rose’s iron sense of purpose.
