In 18th-century France, Andre Moreau goes undercover with a troupe of actors after his friend's murder sets him on a collision course with an aristocratic master swordsman. Stewart Granger is the quick-witted Andre, moving between the stage and the salons of a country edging toward revolution. Eleanor Parker and Janet Leigh figure into the tangled rivalries and romances around him, while Mel Ferrer's duelist gives the feud its center. The film folds disguises, backstage intrigue, and courtly maneuvering into its revenge story, with elaborate swordplay staged against a bright Technicolor backdrop.
