Alias Nick Beal
CrimeDramaFantasyHorrorMysteryThriller93 min
Straight-arrow district attorney Joseph Foster blurts that he’d sell his soul to bring down a mob boss, and the bargain seems to answer him. Thomas Mitchell is Foster, whose sudden path to a conviction — and then a run for governor — begins when Ray Milland’s Nick Beal appears with exactly the evidence he needs. As Beal’s influence tightens, Foster’s public rise is matched by private rot, while his wife and a determined minister try to pull him back. Folding the Faust legend into a shadowy postwar crime story, the film threads political ambition, corruption, and the uncanny through its noir world.
