In warlord-era China, arrogant commander Hou Jie is riding high after a battlefield victory and a duel that leaves Shaolin's monks insulted and defeated. Then his fortunes collapse: after a rival destroys his family, Andy Lau's Hou Jie takes refuge inside the monastery he once mocked. As civil unrest spreads and ordinary people are caught in the fighting, Cao Man (Nicholas Tse), Hou's former second-in-command, rises outside the temple with ambitions of his own. The story moves between monastery discipline, shifting loyalties, and martial arts combat as Hou and the Shaolin masters are pushed toward a dangerous stand against the warlords tearing the region apart.
