Dear Evan Hansen
DramaMusical137 min
Ben Platt is Evan Hansen, a high schooler with social anxiety whose private letter is mistaken for a classmate’s suicide note. The mistake pulls Evan into the life of a grieving family and into a version of himself he can’t keep up for long, as school gossip and social media give the lie a larger audience. Adapted from the stage musical, the film uses songs to bring Evan’s spiraling thoughts to the surface while keeping its focus on loneliness, grief, and the cost of being understood for the wrong reasons. Kaitlyn Dever, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams round out the ensemble around him.
