An Angel at My Table

Drama158 min

In mid-20th-century New Zealand, a shy, red-haired girl grows up feeling out of step with her family, her classmates, and the world around her. As Janet Frame moves into adolescence and early adulthood, poverty, loneliness, and repeated misunderstandings push her toward a psychiatric system that labels her illness before anyone understands her. Years of institutions and the threat of drastic treatment narrow her life, even as writing becomes the place where she can make sense of it. The film follows Janet from childhood into adulthood, tracing how small humiliations, missed connections, and hard-won chances shape a voice that refuses to disappear.
