Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Drama121 min
On November 25, 1970, Japanese writer Yukio Mishima moves through a day of mounting ceremony as his life and fiction begin to mirror each other. Ken Ogata is Mishima in Paul Schrader’s portrait, which threads together flashbacks from the author’s past with stylized dramatizations of The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Kyoko’s House, and Runaway Horses. Rather than following a straight chronology, the film builds four interlocking chapters around Mishima’s public image, private contradictions, and nationalism, using bold stage-like sets and Philip Glass’s score to give the novel sequences a distinct, heightened world.
