Carol White is a Los Angeles housewife in 1987 whose carefully ordered suburban routine begins to collapse when she develops a debilitating illness no doctor can clearly diagnose. Julianne Moore is Carol, moving through doctors’ offices, aerobics classes, and immaculate homes as everyday air, chemicals, and surfaces start to feel dangerous. As her symptoms worsen, she comes to believe she has extreme environmental allergies and leaves for a remote retreat built around isolation and recovery. The film follows her through a world of medicine, self-help, and affluence that keeps offering explanations without much certainty.
