After the Civil War, cattle baron Thomas Dunson sets out to drive his herd north from Texas, convinced sheer will can force a path where none exists. John Wayne is Dunson, whose authority hardens into something harsher as the trek wears on, while his adopted son Matthew Garth (Montgomery Clift) begins to challenge the man who raised him. Howard Hawks turns the cattle drive into a long, punishing test of leadership, with trail hands, river crossings, and the constant threat that Dunson’s iron rule will split the outfit before they reach market.
