On the Fourth of July in 1876, Lin McAdam rides into town hunting Dutch Henry Brown and ends up facing him in a shooting contest for a rare Winchester rifle. James Stewart is McAdam, who wins the prize only to have Dutch steal it and disappear. As he gives chase, the rifle passes from owner to owner — through robberies, poker games, cavalry skirmishes, and roadside holdups — turning into the thread that connects a string of confrontations across the West. Shelley Winters and Dan Duryea are among the faces caught up in the rifle’s trail as McAdam closes in on an older feud.
