After a school bus crash kills more than a dozen children, a mountain town in Canada is left to mourn while an out-of-town lawyer tries to turn the tragedy into a class-action case. Ian Holm is Mitchell Stephens, moving from house to house and finding grief, anger, and suspicion instead of easy agreement. At the center of the aftermath is teenager Nicole (Sarah Polley), one of the survivors, whose own life has already been marked by a different kind of damage. As Stephens presses families to sign on, private loss starts to divide neighbors, parents, and the few children left behind.
