Frank Sinatra is Col. Joseph Ryan, an American POW officer in wartime Italy who seizes a chance to break Allied prisoners out of camp and commandeer a freight train toward Switzerland. The problem is that the men he suddenly leads are mostly British soldiers who don't trust him, and Trevor Howard's senior officer is in no hurry to fall in line. As the train moves through German-occupied territory, the escape depends on stolen uniforms, split-second decisions, and staying ahead of soldiers who are closing in from the rails and the air.
