Henry VII: Winter King

Documentary59 min

Historian Thomas Penn traces how Henry of Richmond landed in Wales in 1485 with a small band of mercenaries, defeated Richard III at Bosworth, and emerged as Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty. Penn follows the new king from outsider claimant to calculating monarch, pairing Henry’s polished public image with the hard politics behind his hold on the English throne. The film folds in the aftermath of the Wars of the Roses, his marriage to Elizabeth of York, the first stirrings of the Renaissance in England, and Henry’s fixation on money and an extensive spy network.
