To Go Viking
Documentary94 min
A Texas Viking reenactment group heads across Europe to join massive living-history events and full-contact battles. Matt Poitras follows the Texas Jomsborg Elag over the course of a year as its fighters, craftspeople, and living history enthusiasts prepare for and take part in large-scale Viking gatherings, including competitive clashes with hundreds of participants. The film also tracks Clinton Dale’s trip to Poland for the International Slavs and Vikings Festival in Wolin, a site associated with the 10th-century Jomsborg army. Along the way, the documentary stays close to the overlap of historical reconstruction, group identity, and combat.
