After notorious bandit Gabbar Singh kills his family, former Inspector Thakur Baldev Singh hires two small-time outlaws, Jai and Veeru, to bring him in. Sanjeev Kumar is the grieving, iron-willed Thakur, sending the pair into a village that lives under Gabbar's shadow. Dharmendra's Veeru supplies swagger and comic energy, offset by Jai's reserve as the mission turns into a revenge pursuit. Alongside the standoffs and skirmishes, the story folds in village routines, romance, and songs, keeping the outlaw plot tied to the people caught between Thakur and the bandit he wants captured.
