After witnessing his father’s murder, Kamal Haasan is Velu Naicker, a young man who kills a corrupt policeman, escapes to Bombay, and begins his rise in the city’s underworld. Mani Ratnam traces Velu from the slums to the center of gangland power, where police brutality and neighborhood loyalty are tightly bound together. Saranya Ponvannan brings a domestic thread into Velu’s expanding world, as the film balances street violence with the lives shaped by his growing influence.
