During World War I in Italy, American ambulance driver Lt. Frederic Henry meets British nurse Catherine Barkley during an air raid, and their romance takes shape against hospital wards, troop movements, and the fighting at the front. Gary Cooper is Frederic, serving with the Italian army as the war keeps pulling him from one crisis to the next, while Helen Hayes's Catherine becomes the center of his life as transfer orders and separation close in. As the conflict spreads around them, both are forced to weigh love against duty and the uncertain future waiting beyond the next dispatch.
