On New Zealand’s east coast in 1984, Boy is 11, obsessed with Michael Jackson, and suddenly face-to-face with the father he’s spent years imagining. James Rolleston is the sharp, hopeful kid at the center; his absentee father (Taika Waititi) comes back to the family’s rural home looking for a bag of money he buried long ago. As Boy tries to turn that return into the reunion he’s dreamed about, childhood fantasies keep colliding with the more awkward reality of who his father actually is.
