In working-class Liverpool in the mid-1950s, teenage John Lennon lives under the strict eye of his Aunt Mimi until a funeral brings his absent mother back into his life. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is John as restlessness and grief pull him between two households: Kristin Scott Thomas's controlled Mimi and Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), whose love of music opens another world. As old family secrets and resentments rise to the surface, John is drawn toward skiffle, the banjo, and the first band he can call his own.
