West Texas driving-range pro Roy McAvoy has let his career stall out, until a new student and her famous boyfriend push him back toward the game he never quite conquered. Kevin Costner is Roy, a gifted golfer with a stubborn streak a mile wide; Rene Russo’s Molly Griswold is the psychologist who catches his eye even as she arrives with touring star David Simms, played by Don Johnson. As Roy tries to qualify for the U.S. Open, his rivalry with David turns professional and personal, with Cheech Marin nearby as his longtime caddy and confidant.
