With their Yorkshire pit facing closure in 1992, the men of the Grimley Colliery Brass Band cling to one remaining goal: reaching a national competition while redundancy hangs over the town. Danny (Pete Postlethwaite) leads the band through rehearsals and setbacks, until Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald), daughter of a former band leader, returns with her flugelhorn. At first dismissed by some of the players for being a woman, she quickly becomes central to the group's chances, and her arrival catches the eye of a younger bandsman played by Ewan McGregor. The film keeps its focus on brass-band rivalry, working-class pressure, and a community under strain.
