After surviving Auschwitz, cabaret singer Nelly returns to postwar Berlin with a reconstructed face and one goal: find the husband she lost in the war. Nina Hoss is Nelly, moving through bombed-out streets and old nightclub shadows in search of Johnny. But Ronald Zehrfeld’s Johnny doesn’t recognize her; instead, he asks this stranger to impersonate his dead wife so he can claim her inheritance. Nelly agrees, using the arrangement to get close to him and to the question she can’t shake: whether he betrayed her.
