In 1944 Arizona, Capt. Josiah J. Newman runs the neuropsychiatric ward at an Army Air Corps hospital, treating servicemen whose wartime injuries are mental rather than physical. Gregory Peck is Newman, a doctor working with scarce supplies, a six-week deadline, and a military that is only beginning to accept psychiatric trauma as legitimate. With help from Tony Curtis’s inventive Cpl. Jake Leibowitz, he scrounges what the ward needs while taking on cases that include a colonel cut off from his past, an officer left nearly catatonic after months behind enemy lines, and a young corporal shattered when his aircraft was shot down.
