Aspiring director Corky St. Clair (Christopher Guest) turns Blaine, Missouri’s 150th anniversary into a full-scale production when he mounts an original musical with a cast of deeply earnest local amateurs. When word spreads that Broadway agent Mort Guffman might attend, the townspeople begin treating Red, White and Blaine as a possible escape hatch from ordinary life. Catherine O’Hara’s travel agent and Eugene Levy’s mild-mannered dentist, along with Parker Posey’s relentlessly upbeat Dairy Queen worker, throw themselves into rehearsals as Corky’s mock-documentary vision of community theater starts to swell beyond the town’s abilities.
