Wealthy Texas rancher Bick Benedict marries Leslie Lynnton, a young woman from Maryland, and brings her into a world shaped by land, oil, and rigid social codes. Rock Hudson is Bick, while Elizabeth Taylor gives Leslie an outsider’s view of the Benedict household and the racism directed at Texans of Mexican descent. When ranch hand Jett Rink (James Dean) strikes oil on a small piece of land, his rise from hired cowboy to rival landowner deepens old resentments. Family battles over money, status, and prejudice spread from the ranch house into the next generation.
