Love and Death

ComedyWar85 min

In czarist Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, Boris Grushenko is a cowardly intellectual pulled toward battle, romance, and a scheme to assassinate Napoleon. Woody Allen is Boris, forever overthinking war, love, and God, while Diane Keaton’s Sonja matches him argument for argument as his distant cousin and uneasy partner. Written and directed by Allen, the film turns duels, firing squads, and Russian-literary gloom into broad farce, with mock-serious conversations about sex, death, and philosophy running alongside the military chaos.
