During the Great Depression, con man Moses Pray is stuck escorting a newly orphaned girl from Kansas to relatives in Missouri, and the trip quickly becomes an uneasy business arrangement. Ryan O’Neal is Moze, a fast-talking drifter who makes his living on small scams, while Tatum O’Neal’s Addie is sharper, tougher, and much harder to brush aside than he expects. Shot in black and white, the film follows the pair across Midwest backroads, funeral parlors, and roadside stops as their arguments, bargains, and hustles pull them into a strange family bond.
