Keith Nelson is an artsy high school outsider who finally gets a shot with Amanda Jones, the popular girl he’s long wanted to date, and asks his best friend Watts to help him make it happen. Eric Stoltz’s Keith steps into Amanda’s world just as her wealthy ex Hardy starts looking for payback, while Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), a sharp-tongued drummer who’s always been at Keith’s side, begins to see their friendship differently. Lea Thompson’s Amanda is caught in the middle of the school’s status lines, old expectations, and a romance that gets more complicated the closer Keith gets to what he thought he wanted.
