Night and Fog

DocumentaryWar32 min

Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, Alain Resnais films the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz and Majdanek, pairing empty barracks and rail lines with wartime footage to document the atrocities carried out behind their walls. Archival images of Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler appear alongside the traces left by prisoners, guards, and the system built to imprison and kill. Written with Jean Cayrol, a survivor of Mauthausen-Gusen, the film moves between the camps’ present-day stillness and the history attached to them.
