In late-1930s North Carolina, the young wife of a tobacco farmer is drawn to the handsome hired hand working her husband’s land, turning a rural marriage into a tense triangle. Lori Singer is the wife caught between duty and desire; Anthony Edwards is the newcomer whose arrival unsettles the farm, while Bruce Abbott is the husband watching the balance of the household shift. Framed by summer heat, fieldwork, and the routines of tobacco country, the film stays close to the strain inside a marriage as attraction and resentment begin to take hold.
