America’s war on drugs unfolds through intersecting lives on both sides of the border: a newly appointed federal drug czar whose teenage daughter is sliding into cocaine use, a Mexican cop drawn into a case against a cartel-connected general, and a San Diego socialite forced to confront her husband’s trafficking empire after his arrest. Michael Douglas is the Washington insider watching policy turn personal, while Benicio Del Toro’s Javier moves through the Mexican thread with wary, procedural focus. Steven Soderbergh cuts among these stories with distinct visual palettes and a wide ensemble that includes Catherine Zeta-Jones and Don Cheadle.
