Billy Casper is a 15-year-old boy in working-class Yorkshire, bullied at school and ignored at home until he finds a kestrel and begins to train it. David Bradley is Billy, a quiet kid whose bond with the bird opens up a sense of purpose amid an indifferent mother, an abusive older brother, and a school that mostly writes him off. Ken Loach keeps close to the routines of northern England — classrooms, back-to-back houses, open fields — as Billy’s English teacher and fellow students become part of the small space where he starts to be seen differently.
