At a late-1960s English boys’ boarding school, power sits with remote masters and sadistic prefects, while the younger boys learn their place through ritual, punishment, and humiliation. Malcolm McDowell is Mick Travis, a Lower Sixth student who starts testing the limits of that order alongside two friends, Johnny and Wallace; David Wood and Richard Warwick round out the trio. As grievances pile up, the school’s polished traditions give way to open rebellion. Lindsay Anderson turns campus life into a pointed portrait of British hierarchy, mixing color and black-and-white and letting realism slide toward something more surreal.
