ReelRecs guides
Find something on Disney+ beyond your usual franchise
Keep the part of a familiar favorite you enjoy, then look for it in a different kind of Disney+ film. Discovery becomes easier when you can name the connection: preparation, an underdog’s progress, music or an imagined world.

Follow the appeal beyond the franchise
If you enjoy a large adventure series, the attraction may be teamwork, a carefully prepared challenge, a character finding confidence or simply spectacular settings. Those interests can lead outside the next installment.
Choose one appeal to carry across. A documentary about physical risk shares little plot machinery with a superhero film, but someone who enjoys preparation and precision may find a useful connection. Someone who wants fantasy and impossible escapes might prefer another route.
Three bridges into a different kind of film
These editorial selections were checked against Disney+'s public US-facing pages on October 23, 2026. Runtimes below follow those specific listings. Check your account for the current offer and version.
| Familiar appeal | Candidate | The connection | A reason to choose another film |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preparation before a high-stakes challenge | Free Solo (2018), 101 minutes | A documentary follows Alex Honnold's preparation for climbing El Capitan without a rope. | Real risk of death or prolonged height exposure is distressing. |
| An underdog gaining skill with help from others | Queen of Katwe (2016), 125 minutes | A drama based on Phiona Mutesi's life makes chess and a Ugandan community central to its story. | You want fantasy action, or poverty and family hardship are unwelcome subjects. |
| Music and an invented world | Soul (2020), 110 minutes | A musician's ambitions connect an animated fantasy to questions about a meaningful life. | You want to avoid death-related ideas or abstract questions tonight. |
Free Solo's PG-13 rating, Queen of Katwe's PG rating and Soul's PG rating provide starting points for content checks. The Disney brand alone cannot tell you whether a particular experience suits everyone watching.
Make the bridge honest
An appeal-based connection should name the difference as well as the attraction. Moving from fictional stunt sequences to Free Solo changes the stakes because a real person is taking the risk. Moving from a chosen-one fantasy to Queen of Katwe changes the kind of achievement and the social setting. Soul uses animation to explore adult concerns without requiring that every viewer take away the same idea.
Those distinctions let you expand your choices deliberately. You do not need to pretend that a film is “basically the same” as a favorite to make it approachable.
Use the right household profile
An adult deciding what to watch should browse the adult profile intended for them. Disney+ explains that a profile's content-rating settings can hide titles in browsing and search. Household members can therefore see different choices within the same account.
Leave children's restrictions appropriate for their viewers. If adults are choosing a shared film, consider their preferences and content limits directly. Being visible in a profile does not establish that everyone in the room wants its themes.
Disney+ can also present content through bundles or additional services. Read the current viewing offer if a title asks you to upgrade; a catalog page alone does not establish what your plan includes.
Turn one discovery into a useful next choice
In ReelRecs, inspect a candidate's personal explanation and see whether the connection matches what you value in known favorites. Save the film when its appeal works but its length or subject is wrong for tonight.
After watching, think about the specific part you enjoyed. You may discover an interest in documentary preparation, sports drama or music-centered stories that gives you a new route through several services.
