A drifter and a runaway end up on the road together, each trying to stay one step ahead of trouble and each other. He’s a former boxer looking for work; she’s fleeing a bleak home life and refuses to go back. What starts as a reluctant ride turns into a cross-country tangle of hustles, arguments, and near misses, as money runs short and bad decisions keep catching up with them. Along the way, attraction keeps breaking through their bickering, even as their plans pull in different directions. Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones lead a story that mixes roadside comedy with the push and pull of two people who can’t quite part ways.
