After a car crash leaves him with amnesia, Michele is still expected to carry on as a Communist member of parliament, even as almost no one around him seems to notice how little he remembers. Nanni Moretti is Michele, trying to piece himself back together over the course of a water polo match on the eve of an election. As the game keeps breaking for arguments, flashbacks, and political noise, fragments of his private life and public role begin to return. Silvio Orlando and Mariella Valentini are among the figures circling him as Michele’s personal confusion starts to mirror a wider crisis on the Italian left.
