When seven-year-old Olive earns a spot in a California beauty pageant, the Hoover family piles into a battered VW bus and heads west together. Abigail Breslin is Olive, the one person everyone can agree to rally around, while Greg Kinnear's Richard is busy trying to sell a failing success program and Toni Collette's Sheryl keeps the household from coming apart. Along for the ride are Sheryl's brother Frank (Steve Carell), fresh out of the hospital, a silent teenage son, and a profane grandfather with his own ideas about pageants. The trip keeps snagging on old resentments, bad timing, and a van that only moves when everyone pushes.
