Montparnasse 19

DramaRomance108 min

Gérard Philipe is Amedeo Modigliani, the Italian painter scraping by in Paris’s Montparnasse quarter in 1919, drinking heavily and trying to keep working as poverty closes in. When he falls for Anouk Aimée’s Jeanne, a young woman from a wealthy family, the relationship runs straight into her parents’ disapproval and the loss of financial support. The film follows Modigliani through studios, cafés, and cramped rooms, where love, debt, depression, and his standing in the art world keep pressing against each other.
