Michel and Günther are stuck in dead-end jobs and consumed by a plan to go to Peru, following a map of the Rio das Mortes to buried treasure. Michael König is Michel, the dreamer at the center of the scheme, with Günther Kaufmann alongside him as the equally fixated Günther. Michel’s girlfriend Hanna, in Hanna Schygulla’s hands, humors the fantasy but wants something simpler and more immediate: marriage. As the two men keep chasing a far-off adventure, their obsession keeps rubbing against the ordinary life waiting for them at home.
