In a seaside California town, Mel Gibson is Mac, a former drug dealer trying to leave that life behind while his best friend Nick, a detective played by Kurt Russell, works a case tied to Mexican crime boss Carlos. The situation tightens around restaurant owner Jo Ann: Michelle Pfeiffer's Jo Ann becomes involved with both men, turning an old friendship into a triangle of divided loyalties. As Nick’s investigation closes in and Mac tries to stay clear of the underworld, romance, suspicion, and a police operation begin to pull the two friends toward a collision.
