Al Pacino is Frank Keller, a Manhattan detective nearing retirement and still reeling from his wife’s affair with a fellow cop. Assigned to a string of murders connected to newspaper lonely-hearts ads, Frank teams with Sherman Touhey (John Goodman) and answers the ads himself to draw out the killer. The case shifts when he becomes involved with Ellen Barkin’s Helen Cruger, one of the women on their suspect list. Against a late-1980s New York backdrop of bars, apartments, and police stakeouts, the investigation keeps colliding with Frank’s bruised private life.
