In post-World War I England, writer and ghost debunker Florence Cathcart is called to a remote boys' boarding school to investigate reports of a child's spirit. Rebecca Hall is Florence, whose methodical skepticism meets a campus still marked by war and by the death of a student. Dominic West’s Robert Mallory, a veteran schoolmaster, becomes her guide through locked classrooms, frightened boys, and a case that resists easy explanation. As Florence searches for a hoax, the school’s isolation and grief begin to unsettle her certainty that every haunting can be explained.
