Monk is a novelist and professor who’s fed up with an industry that rewards narrow, stereotyped ideas of Black life. Jeffrey Wright is Monk, who decides to prove his point by publishing an intentionally outrageous book under a pen name, only to watch it embraced as serious literature. What starts as a provocation pulls him deeper into the publishing machine he disdains, as success, publicity, and hypocrisy start closing in. Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae join the ensemble around Monk’s increasingly complicated stunt, with comedy and discomfort rooted in the gap between what he meant to expose and what the culture is eager to celebrate.
