In 18th-century Vienna, court composer Antonio Salieri watches the arrival of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart turn admiration into jealousy. F. Murray Abraham is Salieri, a disciplined musician and imperial insider who cannot understand why such extraordinary music comes from someone so unruly. Tom Hulce’s Mozart is brilliant, immature, and impossible to ignore, upsetting the etiquette of palaces, salons, and opera houses as quickly as he electrifies them. Elizabeth Berridge appears as Constanze, caught in the pressures around Mozart’s work and reputation. Miloš Forman’s film frames their rivalry against a lavish world of court politics, religious guilt, and the relentless presence of Mozart’s music.
