The Lion in Winter

Drama134 min

At Christmas in 1183, King Henry II gathers his estranged family in an English castle to decide who will inherit the throne, turning a royal holiday into a contest of threats, bargains, and old betrayals. Peter O'Toole is Henry, still domineering and quick with a barb, while Katharine Hepburn's Eleanor of Aquitaine meets him line for line as they battle over which son should succeed him. Around them, Richard, Geoffrey, and John jockey for position, with the French king Philip II and Henry's mistress Alais watching for advantage. The fight for the crown is inseparable from the grudges inside the family.
