Jean-Claude Van Damme is Frank Dux, a U.S. Army officer who goes AWOL to reach Hong Kong and enter the Kumite, a secret full-contact martial arts tournament fought outside any official rules. As Dux moves deeper into the underground competition, the film builds around one-on-one bouts, rival fighters, and the code he learned from his martial arts training. Bolo Yeung’s Chong-Li is the vicious standout among the contenders, and Leah Ayres appears as an American reporter trying to get close to the closed-off world surrounding the event.
